Three-way mayor race heads full city ballot
A flurry of last week, even last day, filings has produced a three-man race for Rockdale mayor and contested contests for all city ballot slots.
Dr. Larry Don Jones and Darrell R. Grear filed for mayor over the past week, joining Collier Perry on the ballot to replace incumbent John Shoemake, who did not seek reelection. Full Story
Merging of development districts on May 8 ballot
Somewhat confusing vote items will nix sales tax for hospital, steer toward development
City council members on Monday okayed an initiative for the May 8 ballot that will merge the current Municipal Development District (MDD) boundaries and the 1994 city limit boundaries, creating one solid district that uses an existing halfcent sales tax for development. Full Story

Organizers were ecstatic about the turnout for the 4th Annual Tejas Art & Book Festival, held in downtown Rockdale on Saturday. A record number of entries for the Downtown Association Car Show, including the muscle cars above, drew onlookers by the hundreds. Full Story
Public Schools Week wraps up with ‘dad,’ Texas play
Two breakfasts and the annual first-grade “Texas” play will wrap up Public School Week in the Rockdale ISD.
“Donuts for Dad” breakfast is 7:20 to 7:50 a.m. Thursday in the elementary and intermediate cafeterias with the annual grandparents breakfast the same times and locations Friday. Full Story
Electric bills ‘smart’ with new meters
Oncor says it will investigate complaints over winter high bills
Some Rockdale residents are joining the chorus of area electric customers concerned over increased bills since Oncor began deploying its new “smart” meters in the area.
The company says the increase has mostly been due to much colder weather this winter when compared to 2008-09.
