Three-way mayor race heads full city ballot
A flurry of last week, even last day, filings has produced a three-man race for Rockdale mayor and contested contests for all city ballot slots.
Dr. Larry Don Jones and Darrell R. Grear filed for mayor over the past week, joining Collier Perry on the ballot to replace incumbent John Shoemake, who did not seek reelection. Full Story
Merging of development districts on May 8 ballot
Somewhat confusing vote items will nix sales tax for hospital, steer toward development
City council members on Monday okayed an initiative for the May 8 ballot that will merge the current Municipal Development District (MDD) boundaries and the 1994 city limit boundaries, creating one solid district that uses an existing halfcent sales tax for development. Full Story

Organizers were ecstatic about the turnout for the 4th Annual Tejas Art & Book Festival, held in downtown Rockdale on Saturday. A record number of entries for the Downtown Association Car Show, including the muscle cars above, drew onlookers by the hundreds. Full Story

We have just completed a most exciting event with our 4th Annual Tejas Art and Book Festival here in Rockdale.
The weather was perfect, the attendance was good and the speakers were great. We had such good volunteers out of our Milano and Rockdale students and that certainly made the day easier. The Car Show was well attended and the entertainment was top notch. Full Story
Jobless rate jumps back to 11.8%
Milam County’s unemployment rate jumped back to its highest level since the peak of layoffs at Alcoa’s Rockdale Operations, hitting 11.8 percent in January, according to numbers released by the Texas Workforce Commission. Full Story

Home is where the wins are and according to their new 2010 schedule, the Rockdale Tigers plan to take full advantage of that mantra with six home games.

Tigers take their own meet for the first time in eight years
Several times in the past couple of years, the line “... for the first time since...” has been included in several sports stories.
Well, it’s time to add another one.
For the first time since 2003 and for the 20th time overall, the Rockdale Tigers claimed their own track meet at the 52nd annual Rockdale Relays. Full Story
