‘Runnin’ Rotiches win again
Dewberry event nets $8,000 for park, 300 register for race

 Jacob and Hellen Rotich of Manor have seen a lot of Rockdale in the past seven months. It just doesn’t take them very long to do it.
 The husband-and-wife team of world-class runners captured the male and female divisions of the ninth annual Dewberry 5K Fun Run Saturday on a course that featured a muddy start and finish.
 The Rotiches did the same thing last October, winning the second annual Kay Theatre 5K Run-Unrun.
 On Saturday, Jacob Rotich captured the men’s 5K in 16:33, eight seconds ahead of runner-up Lorenzo Moreno of Cameron.
 Hellen Rotich clocked in at 18:09, 51 seconds ahead of runner-up Vanessa Kelly of Austin.
 The event, co-sponsored by Alpha Tau Delta sorority and Alcoa’s Rockdale Operations, raised $8,000 for Veterans Memorial Park.
 The nine runs have now netted more than $58,000 for the park.
 Mary Garza, race organizer, said about 300 runners and walkers (all ages) registered but not all showed up.
 The run was held just a few hours after a major hailstorm hit Rockdale and Central Texas.
 A total of .8-inches of rain accompanied the hail and turned Brazos Street, which is temporarily dirt due to a re-paving project, into a muddy start-finish area.
 Mike Pruett of Rockdale won the men’s walk in 35:58 while women’s winner Romana Barrett of Austin was just one stride behind in 35:59.
