Pro rodeo, dances, cookoff head up this summer event

Jubilee Days, Rockdale’s annual mid-summer celebration, featuring pro rodeo action and weekend dances, has a different look and definitely a tasty aroma this time around.
The first-ever Jubilee Days Barbecue Cookoff will be held Saturday at Fair Park’s “barbecue alley” near the park clubhouse and if the sights, sounds and smells remind Jubilee Days-goers of the Rockdale Fair, that’s not by accident.
“We’re trying to make this cookoff just as much like the Fair’s as possible,” Leroy Stephens, president of the Rockdale Roping & Cutting Club, said. The roping club organizes Jubilee Days.
Deadline extended
“The cookoff is looking very good so far as participation goes,” Cindy Hughes, event co-chair, said. “We still have some sites available and will continue to accept applications until Friday.”
She said check-in and set-up for teams is Friday and cooks will follow this turn-in schedule on Saturday:
11 a.m., exotics; 12-noon, chicken; 1 p.m., pork; 2 p.m., beef.
“Awards will be announced at 4 p.m.
Calf scramble
An old Jubilee Days event gets a new wrinkle this year with three calf scrambles during CPRA professional rodeo performances Friday and Saturday in the Roping & Cutting Club arena.
Last year there were two scrambles, children’s and adults’. “This year we’ll have one for ages 6 and under, one for ages 7-12 and another for ages 18 and over,” Stephens said.
“First prize in the adult scrambles is $50, with $10 in the kids scrambles,” he said
Sponsors are B.S. Tire and Whiteley Farm Supply.
Rodeos, dances
Professional rodeo action gets under way at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the roping club arena.
Arena action starts Wednesday at 7 p.m. with team roping and continues at 7:30 p.m. Friday with barrel racing.
There will be dances Friday and Saturday at the park pavilion. The Debonaires will perform for the 9 p.m. to 12-midnight dance Friday.
Saturday headliner will be Rockdale native Lange Debault. That dance begins at 9 p.m. and ends at 1 a.m.

Season tickets, admitting the bearer to pro rodeo action and dances are now on sale at $10 for adults and $5 for children 7-12. Children 6 and under and those over age 75 are admitted free.
