A 29-year-old area resident was reported in stable condition in Scott & White Hospital after a Monday incident in which he was shot in the stomach, apparently by a motorist he had stopped to help.
Sheriff David Greene said Sabino Alvarez and another man were on FM 2269, northwest of Cameron, about 4 a.m. when they stopped to offer assistance to occupants of a vehicle stopped on the roadside.
“As they pulled up, an undetermined number of people got out of the parked vehicle and one approached the passenger side of the vehicle Alvarez was in and shot him in the stomach,” Greene said.
Alvarez’s companion drove him to Central Texas Hospital. He was later transferred to Temple.

Deputy Sheriff Oly Ivy investigated a report of “possible child molestation” in the Rockdale area on Friday.
No arrest has been made.
