Young, Atkins named spiker MVPs of their respective distircts
Two area volleyball players were named as their districts’ Most Valuable Players this week as Milano and Thorndale teams finished their postseason runs.
The Milano Lady Eagles’ Devon Young, a senior, was named District 16-A MVP where Milano went 10-0 and advanced to the regional quarterfinals round.
Milano’s Masey Turnage, just a sophomore, was named the league’s Offensive MVP, with Calvert’s Daronisha Wallas named Defensive MVP and Mumford’s Lucy Pompa as Newcomer of the Year.
Milano had just one girl, junior Sarah Alexander, named to the first team. Sophomores Taryn Love and Stephanie Philpott were named to the second team for the Lady Eagles. Receiving honorable mention was sophomore Allison Dodd.
The Lady Eagles also hit the books as well as the volleyball this season with seven receiving academic all-district honors. Love, Dodd and freshman Desiree Adrian were named to the first team academic all-district.
Receiving second team academic all-district nods were seniors Young, Katie Walker and Vanessa Vargas, along with Philpott.
Thorndale’s Jillian Atkins, a senior, was named MVP of District 25-A where the Lady Dogs sported a 9-1 record, sharing the district title with Granger.
The team advanced to the regional quarterfinals round before falling to Class A powerhouse Round Top-Carmine. Kayle Titlow was named the district’s newcomer of the year.
Granger’s duo of Kendra Whitley and Sierra Repa were named outstanding offensive and defensive players of the year, respectively.
The Lady Dogs had two members selected to the first team in senior Lauren Montagnino and junior Kristen Kieschnick.
No Thorndale girls made the second team, but receiving honorable mentions were Breanna Carrizales, Jordan Heine, Ashley Smith and Adriana Reyes.
