Texas is 801 miles from north to south and 762 miles from east to west but, according to readers of Texas Monthly magazine, the best barbecue in this barbecue-crazy state is either in Rockdale or 18 miles away in Lexington.
Brett's Backyard Barbecue of Rockdale and Snow's in Lexington won the "semifinal" matchups this week in the magazine's ongoing quest to have its readers determine the state champion from a field of 36 that included virtually all the "heavy hitters" from past best-of compilations.
Brett's defeated Austin legend Franklin BBQ in its semifinal matchup while Snow's won over Kreuz BBQ of Lockhart. In past years both Franklin's and Snow's have been termed best-in-the-state in Texas Monthly articles. This time it's the magazine's readers doing the picking.
Brett's advanced by defeating Micklethwait Quality Meats of Austin, Heim’s of Fort Worth and Valentina’s of Austin.
Such titans of “Texas Que” as Louie Mueller’s of Taylor and Cooper’s of Llano have already been eliminated. Snow’s defeated Louie Mueller’s and Cooper’s fell to Kreuz in the quarterfinals, according to Texas Monthly readers.
In April, Brett’s was named one of the top 25 new barbecue joints in Texas by the magazine.
