Whinstone USA, whose interest in the former Alcoa Rockdale Operations, was the topic of a July Reporter article, will hold a formal groundbreaking next week as it begins to construct a major data center.
Whinstone Chief Operating Officer Lyle Theriot told The Reporter in an interview near the site that an initial 180,000-square-foot facility will be built, with 75 permanent employees but plans are for the facility to grow to a million square feet and employ up to 200.
It will be a new facility near the former Alcoa potlines.
Theriot said Bitcoin mining will be a part of the endeavor, but Whinstone will also be involved in video rendering--using information from a coded data source to produce and display an image--and artificial intelligence, the kind of high tech which drives "Siri" and facilitates sophisticated chat options.
He said Whinstone is working closely with area schools and Employment Solutions of Texas, and is already accepting applications for employment.
Much more information will be in an article in the Nov. 7 Reporter.
