Body

For the past several days I have been busy taking lots of photos with so many events going on around town.

Rockdale Earth Day’s Day of Service started at the high school gym on Friday morning and those kids, and many adult volunteers, worked hard on several projects like picking up trash on the highway and lots of downtown projects painting railings and mulching trees. It was a nice day and our town looks better already.

Saturday morning I went to the city’s Stash Your Trash event and I couldn’t believe all the cars and trucks in line. In fact, there were so many that some people had to be turned away because the giant skiffs were full. But not to worry because there will be another one in both the summer and fall.

Also, don’t forget about the Hazardous Waste Collection this Saturday, April 30, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 501 East US 79, Thorndale. Fluorescent bulbs, petroleum products, pesticides, acids, household cleaners, cooking oil, paint, antifreeze and batteries. No tires, electronics, fire alarms, smoke detectors, explosives, pressurized containers or brush.

I stopped by the plant exchange at Wolf Park Saturday morning and I couldn’t believe how many seed packets Rockdale Walmart donated for the event. There was something for everyone’s garden.

Saturday afternoon was the Family Funfest at Veterans Memorial Park sponsored by Rockdale’s finest and Aware Central Texas. I hope you and/or your kids got out to meet our police officers.

Sunday there was a car parade to welcome home Darian “Hump” Jackson who is out of both the hospital and rehab. Our Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department led the parade with many cars and motorcycles.

—kwc— Early voting began on Monday for the city council and school board races and continues through May 3. Saturday, May 7 is voting day. Please get out and exercise your right to vote.

As a reminder of who is running for what:

ROCKDALE MAYOR— Incumbent Mayor John King is running for reelection against Brett Boren.

CITY COUNCIL EAST WARD—This is one race you will need to pay attention to when voting because one of the people on the ballot has become ineligible. Incumbent city councilwoman Michelle Larkin’s name will be on the ballot, but she has recently resigned and moved to Georgia. It was too late to have her name removed from the ballot. If you want your vote to count, Esmeralda “Esme” Reulas-Olivares is the only viable candidate in this race.

CITY COUNCIL WEST WARD—There are two new candidates on the ballot for this spot which was formerly held by Belinda Hillhouse who is not running for reelection. Braden Wallis and Kyle Walker will vie for this spot.

This race is for the remaining term of Brett Boren who had to resign in order to run for mayor. Brad Caffey is running for this spot unopposed.

SCHOOL BOARD PLACE 3—Amy Ogea Cases is running unopposed for this place as trustee.

SCHOOL BOARD PLACE 4—Charles Miles is running unopposed for this place as trustee.

SCHOOL BOARD PLACE 5—Lindsey Jergens Lillard and Braden Byrd will vie for trustee for this spot.

Both early and election day voting in Rockdale will be held at the hospital at 1700 Brazos Avenue.
