100 YEARS AGO…

Displaying a dazzling defense that their opponents could not penetrate, Rockdale High School tigers reversed the tables and defeated Cameron High School cagers here last Friday night 10-6. Cameron won Wednesday in Cameron 22 to 15.

Mrs. H.C. Meyer entertained the Merrie Wives Club with an oyster supper served at the Mrosko Café, after which the party repaired to the hospitable Meyer home for a series of games of “42.” Two new members were received into the popular club on this occasion, in the persons of Mr. and Mrs. Wynette C. Marrs. Following the games prizes were awarded as follows: Club prize for gentlemen, a complete automobile cushion set, to Mr. E.B. Phillips. Club prize for ladies, a weekend hat box, to Mrs. C.G. Green. The guest prize, a beautiful artificial water lily, went to Miss. Eleanor Phillips.

On Friday, February 22, all of the divisions of the Parent-Teacher Association will have a joint program at the school at 3:30 o’clock. The program will be a musical program in the interest of the piano instruction and the music memory courses now being offered in the school. It has been planned by the mothers and teachers to show just what an important part of the musical education has come to have in the public school. The program will be given entirely by the pupils and instructors. The work of the music memory course will be new to many.

Farmers are invited to meet in Rockdale at the city hall Saturday, February 23 at 3:00 p.m. for the information of a company of a capital of $10,000 to finance crops with cheap money through the National Farm Loan Bank of Houston.

40 YEARS AGO…

The elementary gym was packed with wall-to-wall wrestling fans Friday night as 1,5000 people turned out to see Southwest Championship Wrestling debut in Rockdale. The four-match card was sponsored by the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department which raised about $2,000 according to Fire Chief Earl Whitmore. A second night of wrestling has been scheduled for March 24.

The Rockdale Junior High Science Fair has been set for 7 p.m. February 28 in the junior high commons, according to James Petty, RJH science teacher. “All parents and other interested persons are welcome to attend and view projects made by sixth, seventh and eighth-grade science students,” Petty said.

20 YEARS AGO… Two dozen grown-ups stood outside in 30-degree temperatures and half frozen slush Saturday morning to catch a glimpse of something so far away it could only be seen well through a small telescope. And were they happy about it? Make that ecstatic. The once-in-alifetime view of two American Bald Eagles on their nest made Saturday’s bird watching tour of Alcoa’s Rockdale Operations a memorable experience for 29 dedicated bird watchers who braved the snow, sleet, icy roads and Arctic winds to attend.

10 YEARS AGO…

A “new look” Officer of the Year banquet is set for Saturday evening at the KC Hall. In 2014, the Rockdale Police Department’s Officer of the Year banquet will be combined with the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department’s annual awards banquet during which Firefighter of the Year, and other recognitions, will be presented.
