Everything is in readiness for the girl’s county basketball tournament to be played here Friday and Saturday of this week. Thirteen teams have notified H.B. Hughes, county athletic director, that they will enter. The schools which will compete are Thorndale, Bryant Station, Val Verde, Sharp, Pleasant Hill, Jones Prairie, Buckholts, Fox, Ben Arnold, Tracy, Duncan, Salty and Rockdale.

Among the social affairs of last week, none more lovely than the afternoon bridge party given on Thursday by Mrs. James L. Coleman. The reception rooms were gaily decorated in crimson hearts and cupids and vases of red roses were placed to advantage. The entire stairway was outlined with hearts that fell pendant from crimson ribbons in graduating effect from ceiling to rail. An artistic menu of pink ice cream in heart molds embossed with white cupid, angel and devil food cake, coffee demi-tasse was served on decorated bamboo trays.

The Reporter has received a request for publication of the following interesting item for Postmaster E.I. Wade, of Rockdale. Rural route patrons will please take notice. Wade says, “I have recently received instructions from the Post Office Department directing me to secure changes in the location of many rural mail boxes in order to make them more accessible to the carriers. It is required that all boxes be located on the right-hand side of the road in the direction of travel of the carriers. Patrons whose boxes to not appear to be in the most accessible locations for he carriers should take the matter up with their respective carrier with a view to relocating their boxes. Full cooperation in this matter will not only favor the carrier but will add materially to the betterment of the services rendered by them.

40 YEARS AGO…

Boise Cascade announced this week that an agreement has been reached to sell its Rockdale Building Materials Center to local businessman Wayne Brinkley. The business will be closed from noon Saturday though Tuesday for inventory and completion of the sale.

The RHS Stage Band was named the top 3A entry Saturday in the annual Tarleton State University Jazz Festival held at TSU’s Clyde Wells Arts Center.

20 YEARS AGO…

Youngsters and their families were thick in Veteran’s Memorial Park during the past week after city crews spread pea gravel to put the finishing touches on three huge playscapes, recently assembled by some 120 volunteers. The playscapes were made possible by Alpha Tau Delta service sorority, along with other donors of equipment and funds plus a state grant.

10 YEARS AGO…

Rockdale volunteer firefighters Mike Korenek was all smiles as he headed to the podium Saturday in the KC Hall to receive his 35-year pin, plus a rousing standing ovation, at the combined Officer-of-the-Year/Firefighter-of-the-Year banquet. Korenek is a former RVFD chief, was firefighter-of-the-year in 1983 and is an organizer for the department’s annual fund raiser. His award was presented by Fire Chief Ward Roddam who praised Korenek as a mentor and said as a youth he remembered Korenek rushing to many a fire call in “that old green pickup truck.”
