100 YEARS AGO…
A contract for another five-year lease was entered into between Uncle Sam and the and the J.W. Perry Estate, which ensured the Rockdale Post Office retention of its location in the Perry building on upper Cameron Avenue. Among the specifications of the new contract was one calling for the installation of a new section of 103 lock boxes.
The Rockdale Ice Factory changed hands and would be known as the Rockdale Ice Co., Chas. E. Scheihing and Herman Vogel, proprietors. Ice prices would be sharply reduced and delivered from the wagon to your door at 60 cents per hundred on a strictly cash basis.
Rachel Marshall was the charming hostess to the Matinee Musical Club. A splendid attendance of club members and the presence of two honorary members, Irena Wisecup and Mrs. O.G. Moore marked the meeting as one of the best of the club. In the musical contest Miss Hale, as winner, received a gift of dainty handkerchiefs. Miss Marshall, assisted by her mother Mrs. G.L. Marshall, served delicious refreshments, concluding a most pleasant afternoon.
40 YEARS AGO…
The new Rockdale Inn going up on US 77 near the US 79 intersection east of town was well under way, according to motel owner Wesley Duncan of Cameron, who said the target date for completion was early June. The motel would have a restaurant in front which would be leased out, and the motel itself was to have 43 rooms.
Donna Schraeder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Schraeder, was crowned 1982 Relay Queen before the finals of the Rockdale Relays.
Dennis, Tony and Terry Brooks, sons of Dr. and Mrs. Dennis Brooks Sr., put on a show at the Rockdale Relays. RHS won the relays, scoring 93 points to edge Bellville as the winner of the meet was in doubt until the last event. And the three Brooks brothers scored 46 of Rockdale’s points, almost half.
20 YEARS AGO…
Rockdale police and sheriff’s deputies, called to contain an impromptu street party of 300 persons after a rap concert, made one of the biggest drug busts in recent years. A Bastrop brother and sister were arrested in connection to the incident which occurred on Rice Street.
Crystal Anderson, Rockdale High School senior, took some time out from the District 18AAA track meet to sign a track scholarship with Sam Houston State University. She was expected to compete in the 400 and 200 meters, long jump and triple jump.
10 YEARS AGO…
Rockdale’s program of tearing down structures termed “unsafe or dilapidated” was on hold, along with those in most of the rest of the state, after an unprecedented ruling by the Texas Supreme Court. In Dallas vs. Stewart, the court ruled 5-4 that a woman whose house was torn down almost 10 years ago in Dallas was entitled to $75,000 in compensation.
Jason Brown, who once quarterbacked the Rockdale Tigers, was to be back in town for a very different kind of public performance. Brown, a concert pianist and nationally-known musician, would present a variety of selections on the piano at the Patterson Civic Center in the fourth of five spring musical events to benefit the Kay Theatre renovation effort.
