100 YEARS AGO…
One of the most distressing tragedies that ever happened in Rockdale resulted in the death of Velma Ashby, the 13-year-old daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. B. Ashby, who met her untimely end by coming in contact with a high-powered electric light wire.
After numerous suggestions and many earnest solicitations from those interested in thoroughbred cattle, swine and poultry, a meeting was called in the Chamber of Commerce rooms. This was a county-wide call for a county-wide organization, and all interested parties were urged to be present. Any man, woman or child who was a breeder was eligible for membership.
Mrs. Preston Perry charmingly entertained the San Souci Club. The attractive home was prettily decorated in pink roses. After several games of 42, Mrs.
Perry served a delectable salad course with long stemmed pink roses as favors.
The City of Rockdale announced new rates effective May 1, 1922. The first 1,000 gallons were $1, the second 1,000 gallons were 75 cents, the next 3,000 gallons at 50 cents and 5,000 gallons were 35 cents.
40 YEARS AGO…
Elementary school principal Eldon Ball took the lead in an elephant race against junior high principal Travis Grindle in a circus promotion at Community Bank & Trust, an event that drew several hundred “youngsters of all ages.” The race helped drum up full-house crowds for two circus performances at Fair Park.
More government surplus was on the way, according to Rev. Don Box, who was helping to spearhead a giveaway of 6,000 pounds of the USDA surplus cheese in Rockdale and Thorndale.
The 100-meter high hurdles were won by the amazing Brooks brothers who took first, second and third in the District 23AAA track meet. Dennis finished first with 14.48, Terry came in second in 14.78 and Tony finished third in 15.21. Dennis also won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles and the high jump.
20 YEARS AGO…
Rockdale’s sports community was in shock after Iowa State softball player Rainey Eanes was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). Eanes is the daughter of Jim and Shelley Eanes and granddaughter of Tom and Agnes Eanes and Don and Ouita Roddam, all of Rockdale.
Jeff Easterwood, Jason Parish and Clayton Bland were to represent Rockdale High School at the state tournament after taking second place at the regional tournament held at Bryan High School.
10 YEARS AGO…
Reporter Editor Mike Brown was named journalist-of-the-year for 2012 by the South Texas Press Association, the nation’s largest regional press association, at STPA’s annual convention in San Antonio. The Reporter won three firsts, a second and four thirds and four honorable mentions in the annual Better Newspaper Contest.
Rockdale businessman Gordon Todd won the first prize, an $11,000 credit card, at the KC Hall as the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department held its annual fundraiser. Floyd Byrd won the second prize, $2,500. Mike Korenek, RVFD spokesman, said money raised during the fundraiser would go toward the department’s rescue truck.
