City building permits hit $1 million for 2010

The Thorndale Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) announces the Culpepper and Merriweather Circus is coming to Thorndale. The circus will be at the Thorndale City Park on Thursday, Sept. 30 with performances at 5:30 and 7 p.m. The three ring circus will have tickets on sale at the Rockdale Federal Credit Union, Downtown Cafe, Thorndale City Hall and Rodenbeck Farm and Ranch.

A 59-year-old Cameron man is facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a public against a public servant and against a family member after a Friday armed standoff in that city ended peacefully.

An arson investigation is under way after a fire call early Monday morning turned out to be a stolen vehicle.

The Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department was called to a location behind Rockdale Intermediate School at 4 a.m. Monday.

A couple of decades ago there was a lot of talk about a “Robin Hood” school finance law in Texas. It basically mandated formulas which shifted money from “wealthy” school districts to those deemed less fortunate.

Rockdale, because of Alcoa’s Rockdale Operations, was classified as “wealthy.”

Animal Health Commission announces office changes

AUSTIN–The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) announced that effective Sept. 1, the number of agency regional offices has been reduced from eight to seven, to improve efficiency of operations.

“Basically, a new coastal region has been created that now includes all of the greater Houston metroplex,” Dr. Dee Ellis, TAHC Executive Director said.

Nocturnal Fest draws 25,000 in two nights

The largest crowd in Milam County in 27 years drew 25,000 music fans to Apache Pass Saturday and Sunday and provided an economic boost to Rockdale motels and restaurants.

At least 50 arrests during the Nocturnal Fest weekend were reported by county law enforcement agencies, although Sheriff David Greene said only five were made on the Apache Pass grounds.

SRO crowd expected at Monday tax hearing

There’s a pretty good chance it will be a standing-room-only crowd in the Milam County Commissioners Courtroom at 9:45 a.m. Monday when commissioners conduct their second public hearing on the 2010-11 proposed tax rate.

An overflow crowd filled the first floor courtroom at the first hearing Aug. 23.

I enjoyed reading the article in the paper about our road problems (Aug. 26).

I have lived on County Road 358 for 27 years. There have never been good roads.

We have two new bridges, a $400,000 bridge over Six Mile Creek has trees growing out of both sides and you cannot see either direction when meeting traffic.

Like you, I’ve seen hundreds of photos over the years of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., and also many of the Jefferson Memorial, but nothing prepared me for just what awesome spectacles they are.

A barbecue lunch and live auction to benefit the Eric Balch family is set for Sunday at the Marak Hall, seven miles northwest of Cameron on FM 2269.

Arledge White, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. G. White, received his $5 prize for being named the “handsomest boy baby” at the 1910 Rockdale Fair.
