There’s lots going on this 4th of July in Milam County. For most people it means parties, fireworks, BBQ, baseball, dances, family, and this year in Rockdale there’ll even be a drone show. With all the opportunities to get out and enjoy the holiday this week, I thought I would touch base on some of the goings-on throughout Milam County. I’m sorry if I miss any, but these were the ones that pop up the most in the media or on social media.

First off, all the fireworks stands are open and there is not a burn ban in effect, so you are welcome to shoot off fireworks, but please do so safely and have water nearby in case something catches fire.

Cameron has several activities headed by the 4th of July Bash at the Cameron Country Club. It will be open to the public and there will be a golf scramble, bounce houses, games, food trucks, tasty beverages, a pool party, fireworks at dusk and live music kicking off at 7 p.m. featuring the South 77 Band. There will be lots of things going on out there at the country club as well as in town with the town square open for business.

In Milano they will be holding their annual Independence Day Parade. The parade is open to everyone so long as you line up for entry by 9:30 a.m. in the school parking lots. Afterwards there will be an All-American hot dog lunch with all the trimmings at the civic center. There will be some booths open out there specifically with baked goods by Bakken Baked Goods – Always a tasty treat! If you haven’t been to a parade in Milano, then you’ve missed it. There’s nothing like a small-small town parade.

Rockdale has a lot going on as it kicks off the 150th birthday celebrations for the founding of Rockdale and Independence Day. Last weekend we got to see the Youth Rodeo in Rockdale, this week will be big as well. On July the 4th, Rockdale will start the festivities at 4 p.m. at Fair Park with games, food trucks, more tasty beverages and an assortment of other activities. Later that evening there will be a drone show that will start around 9 p.m. capped off with a fireworks show at 9:30 p.m.

On Friday, July 5, the Kay Theater will host a viewing of the Sean Connery Movie “The Hunt for Red October.” If you haven’t gone to the Kay to watch a movie then you’re missing an experience for sure. As a Navy veteran who spent most of his aviation career tracking submarines for a living, this movie is a little hokey, but it’s still a great Cold War movie.

Saturday morning July 6, the Rockdale 150th Celebration Parade will be coming down Highway 79. The 1895 historical building will be hosting a watch party beside their building with food, drinks, live music and outstanding views of the parade as it goes by. This is where the Nurse and I watched the Christmas parade, and it was wonderful viewing from there and the folks at The 1895 do a great job of hosting an event.

This is a special couple of weeks for Rockdale. There are many events celebrating the Rockdale 150th Celebration so check out the papers, look on KRXT 98.5 FM, the Rockdale Chamber and city websites or Facebook sites. This is a special time for any community and even though some are older, this is Rockdale’s opportunity to celebrate its past, and its future.

Lastly and just as importantly, this is the 298th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the start of our great nation. I can trace two of my ancestors that were there and signed this document. Like most of the others who also signed the Declaration, both of them faced various struggles as a result of their signatures to this document or their service in the revolution. So, while we’re celebrating over the next week, remember those who came before us over the last 298 years and more, who made America the great nation it is.
