Body

My latest sporting adventure was girls’ high school golf on the morning of Thursday, Feb. 27. I needed to get at least one good photo of either Whitley Boyd or Maddy Moody to use in the sports section.

Whitley had a root canal so Miss Maddy Moody was the only Rockdale player playing golf that day. She is adorable. She was playing her rounds with My Krause from Lexington, also adorable. And both were so nice and friendly. Good parenting, Maddy and Aly’s parents.

You already know this story doesn’t go well.

Luckily, Mary Lou Loehr, Rockdale Country Club worker bee, was telling me where to go and introducing me to the players and the golf coach, Ethan Noel, who looked only slightly older than Maddy Moody.

Mary Lou also told me that I could use her card to follow the girls around. I figured I needed a badge or something to be on the course.

So the girls were finally ready and they took off to hole number five where their team was starting, and I followed behind. They had carts and I was walking.

Did I mention it was also 29 degrees that morning?

Play started. I got some pictures of the girls. They putted, sank their shots, all was well at hole number five.

I thanked the girls for letting me follow them around and took off for the office.

When I got back to the office all of the photos looked like I had taken photos of cute girls playing golf in a snowstorm. They were overexposed.

I asked, Shannon, our artistic guru, if he could fix them and he just looked at me like I was crazy.

So I called Mary Lou and asked if the girls were still golfing. They were. So back to the country club I went with a different lens, because Mike Brown told me, “You can’t shoot outdoor shots with a wide angle lens, you idiot!”

As luck would have it, Maddy Moody had on a blue shirt that day and was the only girl in blue so she was easy to find. I traipsed out to she and Aly and told them my earlier photos had turned out very badly and asked if they minded if I followed them around again. They didn’t.

I got some great shots of both girls, then made my way back to the clubhouse to eat lunch. Because by this time, I had spent all morning getting these shots, I was hungry and I knew Mary Lou was a good cook. I had probably walked five miles in 29-degree weather.

I ordered a cheeseburger with mayo and mustard all the way with extra pickles—and fries.

It was delicious. If you haven’t tried Mary Lou’s cheeseburgers you need to get to the Rockdale Country Club.

Sandy Glazer and her friends were there playing canasta. I’ll bet they ate cheeseburgers too.

As I was leaving I told Mary Lou that I had to leave to follow the girls around without getting her card.

She said, “What card?”

I told her, “You said I could use your card to follow the girls around on the course.”

“No hun,” said Mary Lou, “I said I would let you use my CART.”

So Mike Brown is correct. I am an idiot. A fat, deaf idiot who absolutely needed to walk five miles in 29 degree weather.
