Last week when I was writing my editorial about Alex Sandoval, I reached out to Kathy Pelzel, principal at Rockdale Intermediate School. I asked her which classes Alex liked and if she had won any awards. That kind of thing.

Well, Kathy, being someone who works around children all the time, really surprised me when she got back to me.

She said, “Instead of trying to write what I thought about Alex, I visited with four of her classmates to get the real scoop.”

And I’m sure glad she did. I think you will be too.

Wylie Butler, Kade Lillard, Bella Alexander and Pailsey Fisher had the following to say about their friend and classmate, Alex.

“Alex is a VSCO girl. She’s into bright colors, Hydro Flasks, saving the turtles and the earth.” (I had to look up VSCO. It’s a photo-editing app that young girls like to use.)

“She loves pickles and salad but hates cafeteria food. She had to eat it one day and was mad about it the rest of the day.”

“Her favorite subject is math and she doesn't like reading. However, she is good at them all.”

“She loves to wear her

hair in braids and likes to wear her VANS.”

“She is really competitive but she also likes to make us laugh so she throws the ball granny style when we play sky ball and is always getting herself out.” Kathy said the kids were laughing really hard as they told this story.

“She loves UIL spelling and number sense and wanted to compete this year.”

“She is the kind of friend that is silly, loving and competitive.”

“She is a Longhorn fan.”

“She loves TikTok, tiedye and softball.”

Kathy added, “Most of all, they wanted you to know that she is a good friend and loves her classmates.”

Out of the mouths of babes. All of Rockdale is rooting for you Alex, including your classmates!

And in related news, the fish fry fundraiser at Brett’s Backyard BBQ was an amazing sight to see. Balloons, a sea of volunteers wearing tie-dyed t-shirts and miles of cars made for an impressive sight.

And it was all for the love a one little girl.
