We’ve all heard the term “American Ingenuity ” and seen many examples of it. As a country of immigrants from all over the world who weren’t happy with where they were so they sought something new and better and different, American ingenuity was a given.

And American ingenuity during this pandemic is right here in Rockdale too. I was reminded of that when I saw a birthday sign in someone’s front yard recently. People invented the “drive by” birthday parties for their kids out of necessity and Rockdale Signs & Photography provided the signs needed to make the birthdays special.

My friend Andrea Bailey decided to put her sewing skills to good use by making masks for anyone who wanted one. And she’s been very successful making and selling over 4,000 of them for $5 each. I’m the proud owner of one of her creations with dogs all over it. And she made sure to put a pug front and center just for me.

I have several friends who started making and selling jewelry during this time. Others decorate Yeti tumblers, purses, personalized t-shirts and shoes. No limit of creativity there.

I remember when the lockdown first started and how Rockdale’s own Connie Banks, owner of The Piano Bar, used her ingenuity and the rules from the governor to make sure we could get to-go drinks with our dinner. And Wendy Pickett had to get creative with her new salad bar at Mr. Gatti’s. Great work ladies.

By the way I think to-go drinks should continue when there’s no longer a virus. Very popular in Texas they are.

And how about our school teachers who had to figure out how to teach your kids. I’ve heard them described as flying an airplane while building it. Lot of ingenuity involved there.

I’m sure there are many other examples around town. Keep it up.

The votes for The Best of Rockdale contest, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, are still being tabulated and we will find out soon who your favorites are.

Thanks to everyone who took the time out to vote.

How is your car knowl edge? Mine is non-existent. I can put gas in one but that’s about it.

Someone jokingly told me, “I waved at you the other day and you just passed right on by without waving back.”

I said, “Where were you? I don’t remember seeing you?”

She said she was in her car. And that explains that.

Some people can tell cars apart but I do not possess that quality. Unless you have a very unusual looking car or a car with an unusual color I will never know it’s you.

I drive a grey four-door sedan. Our office manager, Suzy Ammon, also has a grey four-door sedan. We park in the same parking lot and I have gotten into her car on more than one occasion. “Oh my gosh! Who put all this stuff in my passenger seat?” I thought before realizing the key was not going to work.

And truth be told there is always something in my passenger seat as well, just different stuff.

So if you ever see me when you’re driving your car you’d better stick your head way out so I’ll know it’s you.
