I was really having a nice Monday last week. I was in a very good mood. So not a typical Monday at all. Or maybe just a particularly good Monday.
At any rate, that night I was sitting outside in my chair when I got pooped on by a bird. That is supposed to be good luck so the day just kept getting better.
I was curious about how that particular thing was supposed to be good luck so I did some research.
It turns out that birds have always been mystical creatures in many cultures, and the Phoenix is a good example of that. Other than that I did not find out much about this good luck charm except that is it thought to have originated in Russia.
However, I ran across another supposed source of good luck which I had never heard about, and it is something that is happening to me right now.
If a dog or cat adopts you it’s supposed to be good luck.
For the past couple of weeks there has been a white dog hanging around our place. I’m sure it was our dog, Kallie, and not me, who made this happen. They love to play together. But I’m the first human in the family to try to make friends.
He’s terribly skinny and there seems to be something going on with his back right leg. And he’s covered with fleas.
Little by little I’ve gotten him to trust me more and more. He will now take a treat from my hand (one of which was laced with a flea pill) and he will come to me for head, neck and behindthe-ear scratches.
Just that little bit has taken a while.
And, oddly, Mom and Dad are mostly on board with having another dog. I did not expect them to be amenable.
We’ve always been a pet family so I’m guessing this new white dog’s kind face got to both of them the same way he has me under his spell.
I’m trying to come up with a name for him. Our other two dogs are girls so I collectively call them “Pretty Girls” when they are together. So he’s been Pretty Boy lately.
My friend, Lisa Koenig, a teacher who is married to Gause Fire Chief Scott Koenig, suggested “Bolt” from a cartoon movie about a white dog which I haven’t seen. Another friend, Delvan Blythe, suggested “Editor” which is kind of nice for our family. And would probably get Dad to come around if he’s sitting on the fence.
Since he’s very skittish it’s going to take him a while to finally have the breakthrough I’m waiting on but that’s OK. I think I am doing things correctly so it’ll just have to come when he’s ready.
This has gotten me to remember a lot of the dogs in my life. The first one was a black Dachshund named “Hiney.” Kathy is responsible for that name. Followed by another black Dachshund named Max. There was a yellow cat named Stanley in there somewhere. We had Dingo who was definitely Dad’s dog. He just tolerated the rest of us.
We now have Kallie who is kind of crazy. We got her by way of Lori McVoy which may or may not have something to do with her craziness. She loves everyone and every dog almost to the point that she is annoying.
My first pug was Sweet Pea, the best pug ever, followed by the current pug Sandie Lou who is also crazy and thinks she’s a Rottweiler.
So if you think of a good name for a sweet lab mix let me know.
