We get by with a little help from our friends when times are rough

Once again Rockdale showed that we can get through tough times together if we help each other out. There was so much good going on during the bad parts of this unusually cold weather.

How about Lee Lee Parsley giving away all of his firewood so people could stay warm without electricity? He was also “caught” plowing the streets downtown last Thursday making sure people could park in front of the downtown stores without having to jump over a big pile of snow.

Someone also plowed Taqueria Banda’s parking lot without telling anybody. I wonder who did that good deed?

Rockdalians were sharing food, water and everything else with their neighbors.

Brett Boren with Brett’s Backyard BBQ fed 625 hungry people with a hot meal last week. Brett isn’t someone who likes to sit around and wait for something to happen. He made a post on social media and the community came out in full force to help feed all of those people.

The Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department offered their kitchen to cook some of the food and prep the plates. Whinstone and Perry & Perry Builders, as well as other businesses and individuals, came through with the money as they often do for our town. And there were over 100 volunteers to box the food and make deliveries.

Two competing businesses in town, Caffey Corner and Cefco, shared each other’s Facebook posts which told what all they had and didn’t have in the stores. That’s teamwork.

And of course the City of Rockdale was doing everything possible to help us all out including giving out lots of water, in addition to all of the public works employees around town doing what they needed to do to get us back to normal.

A huge shout out should go to our friends at Brookshire Brothers. Since Walmart was unable to open for several days due to not having any water, Brookshire’s and their employees were the only game in town for groceries. It was all hands on deck and the store was busier than it’s ever been last week. Hats off to all Brookshire’s employees for going the extra mile to help our neighbors.

Also, try to remember to bring your own bags to the store because they are running low on them. Let’s help them out like they’ve been helping us.

Tina Carroll, manager of Cefco, even offered a quart of goat milk for a baby in need. She posted on her Facebook page many times about when the next milk delivery was expected. She’s a good mama and she was worried about your babies too.

Our postal employees were also on the job every day even though they couldn’t deliver the mail for a few days because of the icy roads. Even if they had had any mail to deliver. But they made sure they were there for any needs the community had.

Milam County Cowboy Church was open as a warming shelter for “those out there serving and protecting us” with stews, soups, hot cocoa and coffee.

A big shout out to those out there serving and protecting us. For an example, read the Sheriff’s calls on page 3A in this week’s paper to see just how busy they were during last Wednesday’s snowy weather. The amount of welfare checks they did to make sure Milam County’s citizens were safe was truly amazing. Great job!

Rising Star Baptist Church also distributed food and water to those who needed it.

And The Reporter Gang tried our best to keep our nearly 4,000 Facebook followers up to date as much as possible. If we helped even one person not have to get out because they saw that a store was closed or helped them to get some hot coffee or food or water then it was all worth it.

This was an historical event for Rockdale. This winter will be talked about for years and years to come. It’s nice when we all come together to help one another out during an emergency, and Rockdale did a very good job of it. —K.W.C.
