Lordy what a fun, busy weekend it was around town.

On Saturday we went to The 1895 to see the Lone Star Jazz Party and market and it was a blast. If you weren’t there you missed three excellent jazz bands, but don’t fret because there will be another one coming up in the spring.

Sparky Thomason ran the show and no one had a better time than he did. He kept saying—and I have to agree— “Can you believe we are having a jazz festival in Rockdale, Texas?” Such a unique event for our town. So if you missed this one, stay tuned for information on the next fundraiser for “The 1895” renovation.

On Sunday we went to get chili at Brett’s Backyard Bar-B-Que for the Milam Touch of Love’s fundraiser to eat for Dad’s birthday lunch, and boy was that some good chili. According to Crystal Denman, MOTL volunteer, there were over 200 bowls of chili served and they made enough money to operate for about three more months.

Don’t forget that the Milam Touch of Love organization is always in need of volunteers for all sorts of things. Sometimes there is paperwork, driving animals to and from places and even volunteers for rounding up puppies that are running free.

Fostering dogs is another big need. According to Jean Schara, “People are always afraid that they will get attached and won’t want to let the animals go to their forever home, but it’s so important in the animal’s development for them to get the family experience.”

After eating all that chili, we went to the 9th annual Christmas at The Kay program and it was wonderful. The Communities in Concert Band was so good and performed all the Christmas favorites, including Sleighride, which is my all-time favorite Christmas tune. It always takes me back to my high school band days. That particular song used every percussion instrument we ever learned.

Then the Rising Star Baptist Church choir got everyone on their feet and clapping for some good old Christmas gospel music. I had a brief scare because one of the performers was L.C. Richards who I haven’t seen in many years. When I first saw him I thought Emzy Jerome Herbert had come down from heaven to hear them sing. And they tell me I look like my father. Anyway, they are always

Anyway, they are always fabulous and every church should have a choir like theirs. The concert ended with a Christmas tune singalong to put everyone in a holiday mood.

After that I had to come to work to download all the photos I took over the weekend and write some things. I was pooped after all these goings on.

I tried to go have a relaxing margarita after that but the restaurant was way too full of screaming children so I got it to go instead. Margaritas to go is still the best thing to come out of the whole COVID ordeal in my opinion.

Monday morning I was invited to the RISD Christmas luncheon and it was a fabulous gathering and meal cooked by the cafeteria staff who once again impressed me with their delicious food. They also catered the distinguished alumni ceremony where I was also very impressed.

It’s not even Christmas yet but I am ready for a boring new week I tell ya.
