As with many things, the holidays will look a little different this year because of COVID-19.
The Rockdale Chamber of Commerce in keeping with social distancing has decided to do a “reverse parade” this year. Floats will line a path in Fair Park to create a walk-thru Trail of Lights.
Businesses and organizations that participate will have their floats and vehicles displayed along the trail.
Participants my opt to create a lighted display in designated areas in the park for spectators to enjoy.
The Trail of Lights will be a one-night affair at Fair Park on Dec. 12 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Another change to the holiday traditions the Rockdale Chamber coordinates is Breakfast with Santa at the Patterson Community Center.
There won’t be the breakfast this year. Instead, Santa will be at the Trail of Lights on stage at the pavilion on the fairgrounds.
“The decision to make these changes was based on two factors,” said Denise Brock, Chamber Executive Director. “In addition to COVID social distancing concerns, TXDOT is also scheduled to begin construction work on the downtown section of US 79, including the sidewalks, sometime after Thanksgiving.”
The Rockdale Chamber is encouraging businesses and organizations such as nonprofit and youth groups to sign up to participate in the Trail of Lights with a float or lighted display, she said.
There will be awards for various categories, and there will also be cash prizes.
“We know many organizations lost their fundraising opportunities due to COVID this year,” Brock said, “So, with the generous help of sponsors, we will be giving out several cash awards.”
Plans include having vendors at the pavilion with snacks and refreshments as well as gifts to help check things off people’s holiday shopping lists.
