JUDGE’S COMMENTS

There is a lot going on in the county this month. Take a look at all of the coming events this month and get out and enjoy, take part and support all of these fine activities that make the community a better place.

• Oct 5—The 2nd annual Rockdale Music Festival is a downtown Rockdale event that features music and a lot of activities for most of the day.

It begins with a Zombie Fun Run that starts at the Kay Theater at 8 a.m. and includes a car show, vendors, washers and a lot of good music at Wolf Park.

This was a big hit last year and it will be better this year.

• Oct. 12—Cameron has its Steak, Stein and Wine Festival in downtown Cameron.

This, too, is an all-day event with many things to do in historic downtown Cameron. It begins with a fun run at 8:45 a.m. and culminates with a 44 Farms Steak dinner prepared outdoors on the square.

Headliner music event is Rick Trevino at the Milam County Youth Expo Center.

• Oct. 11-12—The El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail Association will hold its annual meeting at Apache Pass on Friday, Oct. 11.

This meeting is dedicated to the memory of Joy Graham who was instrumental in acquiring El Camino Real signs in Milam County.

All events are open to the public, but reservations are required. Friday events include a luncheon, business meeting, sign dedication, reception and dinner.

Speakers include Steven Gonzales, executive director of ELCAT as well as Sergio and Melinda Iruegas of GTI Environmental, LLC.

Reservations are required and the deadline is Oct. 7, at the following web page:

On Saturday, Oct. 12 there is a guided tour of historic sites in the county that focuses on the El Camino Real.

The tour will begin at the Cameron Courthouse at 9 a.m. Saturday, and you will be transported to Sugar Loaf Mountain for a tour and explanation of its significance; to privately owned properties where you will walk to swales and a village site.

The tour will return to Cameron to visit the El Camino Real photography exhibit at the Milam County Historical Museum followed by dinner and entertainment at the Steak, Stein and Wine Fest.

• Oct. 17-19—The Rock-dale Fair is an annual huge three-day event that has been around since 1976.

There is free admission to Fair Park on for family night Wednesday, Oct. 16, which enables kids to attend the carnival without a charge for entering.

There are major headliners to dances Oct. 17-19.

These are all great events and I encourage you to come out and be a part of these community activities. See old friends and meet the new people of the county, enjoy the camaraderie and be a part of something special.
