Jerry Muhamet, the current sergeant investigator for the Milam County District Attorney’s Office, has covered just about every aspect of law enforcement during his career so far.
He has been a patrolman and corporal on city police forces, he has supervised criminal justice training and instructed others in basic peace officer courses as an adjunct instructor at Central Texas College Regional Police Academy.
Plus he had a military career in the Air Force and Reserve with four years on active duty and another nine years in inactive duty.
Muhamet, who is from Temple, attended college at Mary Hardin-Baylor in the next-door city of Belton.
After college where he made his military commitment in Reserve Officers’ Training Corps and his active time in the Air Force, he went to the police academy.
“I went to the police academy to work for the Austin police force,” he said. “I was young and enamored with Austin, that represented metropolitan policing and lifestyle.”
He remained on the Austin force for 12 years before going to work for Central Texas Council of Governments in a variety of roles.
But he found his way back to a police force this time in Cameron and first as a volunteer. Soon, however, he was a member of the regular force working up to the rank of detective corporal.
“I had the opportunity to become the department’s investigator which had been an initial goal,” he said.
He “retired” from the Cameron force in April of 2020, but went right back to work that same month in his current role with the county.
“One of my duties is to act as a liaison between the prosecutor’s office and the law enforcement agency. I offer advice from a police perspective,” he said. “I find and interview witnesses. I assist prosecutors in preparing cases for a trial.
He said he is comfortable in his role as the investiga tor for the county.
“I love the work environment. I think we have a really good team here,” he said.
Even in his spare time he is working with an aspect of the law.
“If I am not here, I do a lot of police training. I am currently a part-time instructor at the police academy in Killeen,” he said.
He also enjoys relaxing with his wife, Tatjana. And they enjoy traveling around the state and country.
He has volunteered for charity events supporting Wounded Warriors Project and Irreverent Warriors, a nonprofit group that raises awareness over military veteran suicide. He is in the American
Legion and other military and professional organizations.
