There is a lot of firework misinformation going around our town. I had a very nice meeting with Jerry McPeek on Tuesday. Jerry and his wife own and operate Big Tex Fireworks out by the KC Hall and they have been doing so for 15 years.
“Fireworks” are not banned. “Aerial fireworks” are not banned.
There are only two kinds of fireworks that are banned:
• Rockets on a stick, and
• Missiles with fins. That’s it. And Jerry doesn’t even sell the banned ones. There are plenty of other types of fireworks that you can shoot up in the air that are not banned. And a lot of others that don’t go up into the air that you can buy.
So go see Jerry for all of your firework needs and have a happy and safe 4th of July. —kwc—
I did something for the first time Friday. I joined a gym. I am now part of the Ric Rodriguez Tribe at Snap Fitness because it’s time to drop some weight. About 30 pounds of it.
I figure there are 1440 minutes in a day, and it wouldn’t hurt me to spend about 20 of them doing something positive. It turns out to be more like 29 minutes because Ric told me I needed to do a five-minute warm up, which I didn’t know about, and then a four-minute cool down, which I also didn’t know about. In that amount of time I burn about 100 calories.
At any rate I am impressed with the gym and Ric who showed me around all the different machines. So far I’m only using two of them. Baby steps.
And I’m not on a diet per se, but he asked me to keep a food chart of everything I eat for a week. And keeping a chart really makes me think about what I’m eating. We’ll see how that goes when I turn it in to him because there is an entire basket of chips and salsa on one of the days and pizza on another. On the pizza day I wrote that I had two pieces but I really wanted three and see if I get away with that.
So hopefully you’ll be seeing less of me soon.
—kwc— The City of Rockdale’s bulk waste curbside pickup is coming up quickly. It will be held on July 13. So start gathering your items and be sure to call the city at 512- 446-2511 to get on the list. Deadline for that is this Friday, July 1.
The city will need your name, address, daytime phone number and a brief description of the items you need to have them remove.
This event is for city residents only and you have to have an active water and/or trash account.
—kwc— I’m finally taking a few days of vacation in July. I received an offer I couldn’t refuse and it is much appreciated. I can’t wait to walk on the beach. I can’t even remember the last time I went to the beach. Hope no one tries to roll me back in the water.
It’s Galveston where we’re going and that was the family vacation spot all the summers of my childhood. I can’t wait to do absolutely nothing and probably get very sunburned. I’m not a farmer, but everything on me that a t-shirt doesn’t cover is fish - belly white . kyle@rockdalereporter.com
