RISD REPORT

This week Rockdale Intermediate School has our column, and the administration and staff have some important information regarding your child’s attendance and how it impacts their ability to succeed in school.

Parents want their children to do well in school but many don’t fully understand the connection between chronic absence and a student’s academic achievement.

Missing a day here or there may not seem like a problem but absences add up quickly.

And, these missed school days can have a large impact on your child’s learning and overall health.

Studies show that missing just 15 days of school each year can result in a child struggling to meet educational milestones, such as reading proficiently for their grade.

Furthermore, U.S. Department of Education studies show that students who don’t meet these milestones are four times more likely to drop out of school than students who met milestones.

The majority of our classrooms are departmentalized, which means your child has one teacher for math/science and a different teacher for ELAR.

Students who are late to school or check out early miss important information from their classes no matter when they miss during the school day.

Our goal as educators, even in lower grades, is not only to prepare your child for their next year of school but to prepare them for what comes after graduation.

Focusing on consistency in attendance will make a lasting impact on your child, long past the time they attended school.

Here’s what you can do to assist your student:

• Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.

• Help your child get a good night’s sleep.

• Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.

• Don’t let your child stay home unless he/she is truly ill.

• If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or administration to see if there is an underlying problem that can be resolved.

• Try to schedule dental or medical appointments before or after school hours.
