FALLING FAR FROM THE TREE

So many scary things are going on these days. It makes me antsy.

This whole business with Iran scares me because I have so many friends with kids in the service.

All those fires in Australia and California. And so many people without homes. And over a billion animals have died in Australia alone. That just sickens me.

Iran accidentally shooting down a passenger plane. Going to go with “accidentally” until I hear otherwise.

And I read today that the Boeing 737 Max had so many problems that Boeing employees wouldn’t let their family members fly on one. How scary is that?

Whether you love Trump or hate him, the uncertainty of the impeachment of a president is scary to any American.

Prince Harry and Meagan don’t seem to want to be royals anymore. Yeah I’m a royal watcher. So sue me.

At least the Patriots aren’t going to be in the Super Bowl. Apologies to any Patriots fans.

It all just makes you want to stay home, get in bed with a warm Pug (or breed of your choice) and escape into a good book.

Growing up in the 60s and 70s books were a big deal in my world. Mom and Dad read to us all the time. Mom always did the voices, and she’s still a good children’s reader. She’s read to the Story Time kids at the library just as she did when I went to Story Time.

And at school I remember after recess or lunch our teachers would often read to us to get us to calm down. And breaking up the story into parts she’d read each day. I wonder if teachers still do that? I hope so.

And because the news is particularly bad at this time I suggest a book series.

I put off reading the Harry Potter books as an adult because I thought they were only for kids. They aren’t. I think that may be the best series I’ve ever read. If you’ve only seen the movies you are in for a treat with the books if you haven’t read them. SPOILER ALERT: Snape kills Dumbledore. Know that going in because I nearly had (another) heart attack. No one told me.

When I started the series I only had the first two books. At the time I lived three blocks from a Half Price Books. I would finish one and then run (literally) down the street to buy the next one. They are that good.

Another good series I enjoyed was The Clan of the Cave Bear. They tell the story of the first humans about 30,000 years ago. I found it interesting because it tells how the first humans discovered things like building fires, riding horses, medicine, hunting, making weapons, turning wolves into dogs and the like. In these books all of it is just discovered by the main character, Ayla, instead of by all of mankind. I had to wait years for the last one to come out and I have to admit I was more than a little disappointed. But the whole series was totally worth it.

I also loved the Hunger Games series. I was trying out a Kindle at the time and read all three on that. As far as I’m concerned there is nothing like an actual book.

So I suggest we all climb into bed and read until the news gets better.
