For a long time I have thought I wanted to live on a farm and have lots and lots of animals. Especially baby ones and miniatures ones like miniature cows and horses and the like. I’m beginning to rethink that idea now that I hear Mary Lou Loehr’s farm life stories on a daily basis.
This morning she said, “Well, my horse tried to kill herself last night.” This was followed by a very long, very scary story about what happened. If I had been there I would have been no help at all. I’d have watched it all play out wild eyed just like I looked while listening to her story.
So if I do ever have a farm I’m thinking there will be no full-size horses on it.
Of course I’m romanticizing farm life. It’s hard work and my hat is off to all who do it. My farm would have to come with at least one farm worker because I’m sure I’d be useless except for bottle feeding and petting them.
But any more Mary Lou stories like the one she told me today might scare me off completely.
—kwc— I got involved with the Rockdale Earth Day group this year and it was so nice to celebrate my first Earth Day with them last Thursday.
I was very happy to see so many students involved from both RHS and RJH. And RIS and the elementary school did their own projects at their respective schools. Getting them started early is always a good idea.
The honorary chairwoman this year is Peggy Perry and what a deserving title for her. The entire Perry family has been involved with Earth Day for many years and she was given a big shout out at the high school gym that morning.
Orange vests, gloves and trash bags were handed out and the kids went all over town beautifying Rockdale by picking up trash. See lots of photos on page 6B.
Our family has finally decided on a date to have our first get together in over a year. We’ve seen a few of them here and there but we haven’t all been together under one roof in a long time.
We are planning our annual shrimp boil for a weekend in June and there’s no telling what other food we’ll eat. Sister-in-law Christine usually makes a huge, delicious breakfast on one of the days and I am looking forward to that too.
I planted zinnia seeds last Thursday as my at-home Earth Day project. Maybe they will be blooming by then for everyone to enjoy. I didn’t water them in because it was supposed to rain all day last Friday. That didn’t happen but it finally started in the afternoon.
We planted tomatoes a few weeks ago and one of them already has a yellow flower on it. Maybe we’ll have some homegrown tomatoes to eat by the time our get-together comes around, which would be nice.
Mom and Dad have worked outside especially hard lately getting rid of all the plants that died during our cold weather. It’s beginning to look a lot like spring around our house.
