Body

Last Wednesday morning after that storm blew through, the following day’s wind was unbelievable. We had small limbs down all over the yard and one of my friends posted a picture on social media of a huge tree which was blown down right on top of her granddaughter’s little red car.

I had to drive to Temple Thursday and I thought the wind was going to blow my car off he road both there and back.

Most of my little ailments can be taken care of right here in Rockdale by the good folks at Cam-Rock Clinic, but I have one of my little ailments has to be handled by a specialist which is why I was driving to Temple.

(Plus, Lisa Kerlin works at CamRock and we always enjoy cutting up with each other.)

When I first moved back to Rockdale I knew I needed a specialist and so, not knowing what my Rockdale life would be like, I chose one in Temple. I thought there’s an HEB there if I’m out of anything that I can’t buy at Brookshire’s, there’s a Long John Silvers, there’s a mall. Obviously at that time I had no clue how tragic the mall in Temple had become over the years. Anyway, it’s a quick trip there and back so all good.

Then something terrible happened. Something unspeakably horrifying and appallingly hideous. The Long John Silvers in Temple burned to the ground.

I stopped by after my doctor appointment to see the devastation with my own eyes. And to lay some flowers, of course.

No one actually died, but it still felt like a death to me.

I always found it funnily ironic that I would go to the doctor and then go right after to eat a high calorie, high fat, super delicious meal at Long John Silvers, of which my doctor would not in any way approve.

One thing I did not find funny was when my doctor weighed me. Because of the pandemic I had not seen her since early 2020. I’ve gained nearly 25 pounds since that visit. It feels, seems and looks like way more than that.

Now that it’s a little cooler I need to start walking my one-mile-per-day again. So if you see me sweating around on the neighborhood streets mind your business because Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming.

When I stepped on that digital scale and saw the numbers flying up higher and higher, in my head I yelled “stop!” At least I don’t think I said it out loud. I guess I should be thankful it didn’t go over 200. But way too close for comfort.

Over the nearly three years I’ve been back in Rockdale my life has been lived out more on West US 79 between here and Hutto than anywhere near Temple. There is no Costco in Temple and my sister-inlaw has a Costco addiction and I am her very enthusiastic enabler.

And we usually stop at The Texan Café and Pie Shop in Hutto on the way home. Last time Noelia and I both got chicken fried steak. And pie. It is any wonder I’ve gained weight?

Plus there are all the good restaurants in Rockdale that I’d missed after being in Houston for so many years. And new ones that weren’t here years ago. All helping me pack on the pounds.

In conclusion, I see myself getting a different doctor in Round Rock in the very near future. I’m told they have a conveniently located Long John Silvers.
