Body

There have been a couple of instances of a return to some sense or normalcy around my house lately.

Mom and her bridge club, Monday Night Bridge Club, got together for the first time in a year a couple of weeks ago. They had everything planned out and decided to meet two weeks after the last member had gotten both vaccine shots.

Mom said she was so happy to have something to write on the calendar other than dentist and doctor appointments, and she was very excited.

All the ladies had a wonderful time at Kathie Bassler’s house and they marked the occasion with a photo taken by Miller Bassler.

At the Bassler home you always get something good to eat, and I even got in on that because there was so much of Kathie B’s shrimp and grits left over that she made all the bridge ladies take some home. And they were delicious.

So everything is back to normal now. At least at Monday Night Bridge Club.

None of the following Easter stuff happened, but it could have so I’m counting it as progress.

We had planned out a lovely Easter lunch with actual visitors for the first time in a year. We planned the menu and even got out grandmother’s china and silver because this would be the first meal in a year around the big dining room table.

We have a smaller table in the kitchen where we’ve had every meal for the past year. Usually just the three of us. Noelia and Augie join us sometimes but the five of us fit around the kitchen table.

Anyway, for one reason or another no one showed up except our 5th grader, Reese, but that’s OK. We moved our Easter dinner to Saturday and we were able to take leftovers to those who couldn’t make it on Sunday.

Like most businesses, The Reporter, has taken a hit with COVID. We are back to 14 pages – at least this week – so that’s a return to normalcy. And my 1982 classmate, Mary Lou Loehr, is mostly responsible for that. I’ve hired her to sell advertising to help your businesses grow. Read all about her on the front page this week.

When we are at 14 pages the Faith page stands alone instead of being a hybrid of two pages out of necessity.

I’ve reached out to several leaders in Rockdale’s faith community and hope to add more voices to join long-time writer, and another 1982 classmate, Ken Ansell.

I’d like to thank Pastor David Kaufmann with Crossroads Bible Church who gave me the idea. He called me one day and said he’d like to participate. I think our readers will enjoy seeing all the voices of faith from our community. Turn to page 4 to read them all.

I hope your lives are returning to a sense of normalcy too, but stay careful as you do so. We don’t want anyone missing when this pandemic is finally over.
