Since retiring from Milano ISD in May, former basketball coach Alvie King has achieved recent success in another career, songwriting.

The song, “Buffett on the Radio”, written by King and performed by Tropix reached number three on Sunday, Oct. 6, on Radio-A1A’s Weekly Trop 40 list, which ranks the top “Tropical Americana” songs according to online votes from listeners.

King also wrote “Back to the Beach” performed by Chas Evans, which is also made the list coming in at number 35.

Tropical Americana is a musical genre that incorporates elements of Island, R&B, Blues, Country and Americana styles of music.

A Milano native, King coached at MHS from 1993 until 2008 before becoming an assistant at Mumford where he earned three state championship rings in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

In addition to being a songwriter, King also trains many of the area’s top high school basketball players and even dabbles in writing children’s books.
