The Community Outreach Dinner celebrates its 20th year of service
Body

The 20th Annual Community Outreach Thanksgiving Dinner will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at First Baptist Church.

These wonderful volunteers have served the community every year since the event was started at New Hope Baptist Church by Pastor Winfred Tyler.

His idea was to call it the Thanksgiving Outreach Dinner and he wanted to feed the sick, shuts-ins, homeless, elderly and anyone who was hungry.

Pastor Tyler asked other churches in town to help out, and all of the churches donated money, canned goods, desserts and lots of volunteers.

Over the past 20 years the volunteers have done everything from serve and deliver food to smoking the turkeys.

In the beginning about 100 plates were served at New Hope, but the event grew so steadily each year that a bigger place was needed.

At first they moved to the New Salem Clubhouse, and when they outgrew that First Baptist Church offered their kitchen and facilities.

This year they are expecting to serve over 1,100 meals. That is a lot of growth.

The meals are turkey and dressing with all the trimmings and sides. And they also include dessert.

This is a great opportunity for your family to get involved. You can donate money or food. You can volunteer to pack the meals. You only need to give them a call.

For more information or to place an order, call King at 512-543-5003, Pearlie Mack at 512-446- 6626, or Vera Rivers at 512-430-0398.

During normal times you are invited to come inside and talk and visit while you eat, but we all know this isn’t a normal year.

Drive-through service will be implemented this time around. You can also pre-order your meals by calling any of the numbers above. Masks and social distancing will be practiced by all.

The bible teaches us, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,” Matthew 25:35.

“If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday,” Isaiah 58:10.

“Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst,” John 6:35.

Congratulations to this fine group of people on your 20th anniversary. You are doing God’s work.
