In yet another instance of things returning to normal, we took Mom out to eat at the Piano Bar & Steakhouse on the Friday night before Mother’s Day, and boy was it delicious.
We really haven’t been going much of anywhere over the past year, especially Mom and Dad, so it was a real treat.
My friend, Barbara, and I went to eat there Friday, Oct. 18, 2019, right before COVID hit and that was the last time I had been. And everything was so tasty. And better yet the current owners are my relatives.
Charlotte Lincoln Schnerr and Carol Lincoln Montelongo’s mother, Ann, married my father’s first cousin, Jimmy Wallis, so that’s how we all became related. And the current owners are Kaitlynne Schnerr, who is Charlotte’s daughter, and Ashley Banks, whose mother, Connie Banks, previously owned the restaurant. Are you confused yet?
Ann married Jimmy when Carol and I were in fourth grade and we were both in Mrs. Marie Gest’s class. Her birthday was one day ahead of mine so we used to have joint birthday parties at Rozelle’s Skating Rink every year.
Kaitlynne’s brother, Dillan Schnerr, can often be found in the kitchen cooking. She says they are very competitive siblings so it gets interesting in the kitchen, which I suppose is one reason the food is so tasty. Their mom and dad, Charlotte and Britt Schnerr, are sometimes around the place rolling silverware with very proud faces on.
Anyway, I can’t recommend highly enough that you go to the Piano Bar and order a giant steak because it was the best one I’ve had in a long, long time. Perfectly cooked and seasoned. And the salad was so fresh and delicious.
What I don’t recommend you do is to order the full-size appetizer sampler platter for only two people, because that’s what Barbara and I did and we got so full that we couldn’t eat a steak. Kaitlynne tried to talk us out of it that night in 2019 but we foolishly didn’t heed her advice. And that full-size platter is enough for at least eight people as an appetizer.
So go see my cousins and tell them cousin Kyle sent you.

Poor Alex Sandoval. I’m so sad for Terri, Andy and the kids. I really thought we would make a difference with all the support everyone gave, but the Lord had other plans for her.
My mom and dad have buried two children and they both say that no one should ever have to bury a child. This time it seems worse because Alex was so young. Not even in junior high yet. At least my brother and sister made it to adulthood.
I wonder how the school will break it to the students? It will be a very sad day for them.
Kathy Pelzel, principal at RIS, sent me some quotes about Alex from four students, Wylie Butler, Kade Lillard, Bella Alexander and Paisly Fisher, for a column I was writing when Alex first became ill. I’ll let their words speak for me.
“She loves pickles and salad but hates cafeteria food. She had to eat it one day and was mad about it the rest of the day.”
“She is really competitive but she also likes to make us laugh so she throws the ball granny style when we play sky ball and is always getting herself out.”
“She is the kind of friend that is silly, loving and competitive.”
“She’s into bright colors, Hydroflasks, saving the turtles and the earth.”
Godspeed, Alex.
