My nephew, Kevin, recently started cooking school at Escoffier School of Culinary Arts in Austin and I have to say I’m a little jealous. We have a family text thread and he’s been taking photos of what he’s learning to do and sending them to us.

He expects to become fat very soon since they are learning to make the five mother sauces, bechamel, velouté, espagnole, tomato and hollandaise.

I always thought it would be fun to take cooking classes, but I don’t think I would enjoy cooking for a living.

And I think time has run out for me anyway, because I chop an onion like I chop an onion, and not the correct way. But I still get them chopped. Not sure I could learn another way to do it.

I like to cook, but Mom does most of the cooking and has been doing so for her and Dad for 64 years and she’s a very good cook. The only kind of shopping I like to do is for food. I love to shop for groceries and hate to shop for almost anything else, so I satisfy my food cravings by buying the food. That’s one of the reasons I like Costco so much is because I can shop for food and they also sell clothes which is where most of mine come from.

At any rate I will enjoy all of Kevin’s photos about what he’s learning and I’ll just go to cooking school vicariously.

I just walked 20 steps from my office to the Talk of the Town Salon and got a haircut. Just like that. I highly recommend that all businesses put a salon in some of your unused space. It’s so handy. Plus Gene sees me every day so he’ll even tell me when I need to get a haircut which is something a lot of men could probably use.

Pruett Insurance has some unused space; put in a salon. Citizens National Bank, which I still call Rockdale State Bank, has lots of unused space; put in a salon.

Every business needs a salon. You’re just going to have to trust me about this.

I was so happy to see how many people turned out for the Starr family benefit at Brookshire’s on Saturday. Charles is the organizer of both the MARC Center benefit and the Buddy Oney Toy Run. It was nice to see people giving back to a family who does so much for others.

Here is a message I received from Kevin Starr, Charles’ brother:

“Kyle, Saturday was such a blessing! We set up about 9 a.m. and baked goods started rolling in from people all around the community to be sold in the bake sale. We sold 240 sandwich meals and we sold out of baked goods about 11:30 a.m.

“It is really hard to put it into words seeing the outpouring of support from friends and family from near and far away that have shown up for Charles and Rose and their family in their time of need. God is so good, and all our family is so blessed to be a part of it and feel the love from everyone for them!

“There are too many people to start naming who helped make this happen for them. God puts us in each other's lives as he has a plan and wow! He sure did!

“Saturday was very windy and cold, and that didn't stop anyone from wanting to come out and show their support in so many different ways.

“As we know Charles’ journey with this is not over, but with everyone's support and most of all prayer, it will help him along to get the care and the things he needs to move forward through it all and back on his feet full time.”

Amen brother Kevin! And thanks to everyone who showed up for this special family. kyle@rockdalereporter.com
