What a difference a week makes. It was so hot week before last that I thought we were all going to die. But I am loving the rain and cooler temperatures lately.
Naturally the rain started as I was delivering papers last Wednesday. I was soaked head to toe when I got finished, but you didn’t hear me complain about it.
It wasn’t actually that much different than usual delivering papers in the Texas heat. I’m just normally wet with sweat instead of rain.
When I got home to get out of my wet clothes even my drawers were soaked. But it sure felt a lot nicer outside. I will take more of this weather, please.
Dad is the official weatherman at our house and over the past several days he says we’ve gotten five inches. And we certainly needed it.
The last day to vote in the Best of Rockdale contest is coming up next Wednesday, Sept. 16. If you haven’t already voted for your favorite Rockdale businesses you still have time. Check the ad on page 6A for all the details.
Finally you will find our Gridiron Football and Fall Sports special section in this week’s paper. Due to the virus the photos of the teams took a little longer than usual this year, but our friend Jocelyn Lewis from Rockdale Signs & Photography did her usual fantastic job so we can bring you this highly anticipated special section.
This is our sports writer, Raynard’s, first year for Gridiron and I think he did a great job covering all of Milam County’s teams.
And a very special thanks to our own Shannon Whorton for pulling it all together and making it look so nice.
And thank you to our advertisers who always support the Tigers!
Sunday was what should have been my 57th birthday but I’m not sure if I’m going to turn 57 or just be 56 again. I didn’t use much of this past year, just like everyone else. I’m still trying to decide.
I woke up early that day and went outside to drink my tea. It was a nice, cool morning. The dogs always greet me enthusiastically every morning because they know I have treats in the pocket of my robe, but they seemed to be a little more happy on Sunday. I’m sure it was the weather and not because of my birthday.
We had a big family lunch with Dad on the grill and Mom and I in the kitchen. Dad grilled a pork loin and it was delicious. Mom, our secret Mexican, made her best pinto beans. We rounded it out with some macaroni and cheese and a raw veggie platter and rolls.
Then we all fell asleep in our chairs. We are a family a nappers, especially after eating huge meals. Every celebration in our family revolves around food.
I went to Gonzales to have a couple of birthday margaritas only to learn that Maricela and Martin Gonzales had already had the baby and were already back at home. Baby Moises was born at 7:49 a.m. and weighed eight pounds and six ounces and he’s 21 inches long. Congratulations to the whole Gonzales restaurant family!
As Miss Melly said in Gone With The Wind, “The happiest days are when babies come.”
