Body

Ididn’t realize how much of a break I needed from work until these Thanksgiving holidays rolled around. I got to be super lazy, except for cooking on Thanksgiving Day, and I was also super lazy about bathing for reasons unknown. I just couldn’t be bothered.

We had a full house with 15 for dinner that day and we ate and ate and ate. I think I hurt myself with that meal and didn’t eat another thing all day. I was a super bad diabetic, but it is a carbohydrate- laden holiday. I was even responsible for the mashed potatoes which I don’t get too many of these days. There were way too many people in that kitchen when I was cooking though. Something odd happened to me with all these guests in the house. I turned into my dad. He was oddly calm the entire time. These “kids,” each with at least one phone, laptop or tablet, caused the internet to run slowly.

I put “kids” in quotation marks because the youngest is 20, and then we have “kids” 22, 24, 29 and 33. The 24-year-old has evidently never turned off a light switch in his entire life. In their defense, only the 33-year-old is bill-paying age, so I guess they all get a break. I turned off the 24-year-old’s bedroom light at least 10 times a day, as my father would have had he not been so oddly calm.

We sure did have a good time though. We hadn’t seen Ken’s boys in a while and they are both in their last year of college, one at North Texas and one at UT. We got to hear a lot of stories we hadn’t heard.

Kennedy and her boyfriend, Derek, had just gotten back from a trip to Taiwan where he is from. Got to see lots of beautiful photos from that country.

Augie, the 20-year-old, loves college so much he rarely wants to come home from Southwestern in Georgetown, so it was really nice to see him and hear about his classes.

And, of course, Kevin, was here to make us all laugh with his stories.

Reese, RHS ninth grader, was also there and we always enjoy him.

Kennedy’s dad, Ruben, also joined us like he does every year.

Noelia’s goddaughter, Mili, was here from Mexico and it was the first time meeting her and she was so sweet. We hope it won’t be our last time meeting her.

So like I said: full house. Mom and her sous chef, dad, made the dressing and they did something really nice just for me: they didn’t put any hard-boiled eggs in it. I was so surprised and happy that I had several helpings of it doused in Noelia’s delicious turkey gravy.

Ken’s wife, Christine, had to come and go the same day because of work, but she didn’t forget her Traditional Thanksgiving Queso, and we all loved that. I was afraid we would eat too much of it before Thanksgiving lunch, but we are a bunch of eating professionals around here. We stuffed ourselves and then watched football and took naps. All was right in the world.

It was a nice visit and I’m glad everyone came. We had a great time.

But I am going to quote Benjamin Franklin here. As I grow older, I understand him better than I did when I was younger: “Guests, like fish, begin to smell after three days.”

Ha! Hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving!
