FALLING FAR FROM THE TREE

Last Wednesday night I was sitting at the kitchen table with Mom and Dad when my phone rang. It was my friend Barbara Holly. It’s unusual for her to call me because more often than not we text or email. She wanted to go to lunch.

After the call when I told my parents what the call was about, since it was Wednesday, they both said, “What did you write about her in today’s paper?”

I did mention her name in an article about the MDD but I couldn’t imagine she would have been upset about it, but she hadn’t told me why she wanted to have lunch so I didn’t know.

So I thought she was going to give me a story or complain about something I’d written. I wasn’t sure.

When I got to Becky’s Sandwiches on Monday to meet her, who do you think was also sitting at the table? The Chief of Police and the lead police investigator. I nearly pooped my pants. What the heck was going on? I sat down and the waitress took my order and then there was lots of small talk with me still wondering what I had done.

I always get the same salad every time I go to Becky’s but I was determined to try something different on the way out there, but I was so nervous that I ordered the salad again.

Long story short, I was not in trouble. She just wanted some help with sesquicentennial planning for Rockdale’s 150th anniversary in 2024.

Remind me to get an agenda before surprise lunches with the city manager next time. —kwc— You all missed out if you were not at the farmers market on Saturday. I had so much fun and wasn’t the weather just perfect Saturday and Sunday? I am sunburned this week after staying outside all weekend.

The best part, for me, was there were baby pigmy goats, a boy and a girl. I got to hold the girl and she was so sweet and seemed to be enjoying me holding her. At one point she got out of her pen and a hilarious chase around Wolf Park ensued before she was captured.

I had heard about the papusa ladies, but I had not been able to try them yet. I hope they are there every Saturday because I got to try them and it was totally worth the wait. I had heard of them from cooking shows but never tried one. They had two flavors, pork and beans with cheese. Be sure to try them and you’ll be hooked.

Masters Martial Art also had a booth next to ours and they did demonstrations all morning long fighting with sticks which was cool to watch. How they managed not to knock each other out is beyond me, but I guess that’s why they offer classes.
