FALLING FAR FROM THE TREE

Had kind of a shock at the doctor on Friday that I didn’t see coming. I have diabetes. After receiving the diagnosis and then thinking about it for a few days I am now not at all surprised.

Since I moved back to Rockdale my diet has not been a healthy one. So much Mexican food and many margaritas, Brookshire’s fried chicken, pizza almost every Tuesday at work and something else unhealthy on the non-pizza days, breakfast tacos every Wednesday morning, bread and more bread.

Turns out a diabetic diet is very similar to the Paleo diet which I was on for years. I need to watch my intake of anything white: flour, sugar, potatoes, rice, etc. That’s doable. For me anyway.

So far all is well. I’ve dropped down into the normal range on my blood sugar since Saturday. It sure works fast.

Started actually using my gym membership. Ric Rodrigues at Snap Fitness introduced himself to me the first time he saw me back at the gym. I had to remind him that we already knew each other. That’s how long I have neglected the gym.

The medicine they put me on is something the Hollywood stars are using to lose weight even if they aren’t diabetic, so maybe I’ll lose some weight and become a Hollywood movie star. But I think that ship has sailed.

When I worked at The Greensheet my friend Scarlette and I had a coworker we worked with very closely. Evidently your pee smells funny when you have diabetes. He was a diabetic and one day when he left our desks, she complained that he smelled awful. “He smells like sweet pee,” she said.

At the time I had a dog named Sweet Pea and I got all offended. -kwc Don’t forget about the annual banquet coming up on April 27 at the New Salem Building in Fair Park starting at 6:30 p.m.
