Body

I feel ancient some days.

And then I feel great some days.

My body is a COVID-19 yoyo.

My diet has gone out the window. What is heart healthy? It’s like I’ve never heard of it. I’ll allow it for a while since eating is my favorite activity.

And God please don’t tell me I got rid of my size 36 jeans because I will be needing them in the very near future. Please let them be in a box somewhere.

During this whole mess it seems like we have had overcast and rainy days an unfair amount of time.

Just what we need is gloomy and ominous-looking weather on our weekly supply forages to the grocery store battle zone.

But there have been some really pretty, sunny days thrown in. They are always a hopeful sign to me. And the days when I feel happiest.

And not to brag, but what a time to be childless.

These dogs are almost more than I can keep up with, but walking them is just about the only exercise I get so I’ll allow it.

In all seriousness I feel for all of you with children at home. You’re heroes and you should have several drinks when homeschool is over each and every day. Or whatever makes you feel relaxed.

Just let them get on their social media for as long as they want to so you get a break in the evening.

That is, if you’re not already “homeschooling with wine,” which I hear is becoming a “thing.” I’d allow it if I were in the same situation.

I’ll also allow going outside and just breathing in the springtime air for as long as it is still a healthy thing to do.

After being in an office under fluorescent lights and no windows all day I sure enjoy my evenings on the backyard deck with the dogs and cats. And June bugs, who I wouldn’t allow if it were possible.

I’ll allow long walks. I’ve been forced to do so by the dogs on occasion when they are tired of being cooped up too.

This is a mostly enjoyable experience except for the fact that it is copperhead season and my very curious, citified pug knows nothing of country snakes.

I’ll allow good books. I have read more than I have in a while, but just when I want to go get my library card they are closed. “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine” is a good read.

I’ll totally allow good wine. Brookshire’s has a nice selection and the kind Mom and I enjoy the most.

I’ll allow cooking. I have been doing more of it lately, and since I really enjoy cooking that’s been really nice.

Mom has been doing all the cooking for the 62 years they’ve been married, so she is the one doing most of it at our house. Every once in a while I give her the night off.

The other night all three of us were in the kitchen cooking enchiladas. Dad is a great sous chef. You already know Mom is a good cook. You can tell that just by looking at how tight my clothing has become. That group effort was fun, and our dinner was delicious.

So allow things that don’t involve reading about the virus. Things that take your mind off your worries. Read. Have cocktail hour(s). Build a fire. Roast weenies and marshmallows. Relax and restore. Especially if you have little ones – or anyone else – counting on you.
