Body

Last Wednesday morning I was invited to be on Judge Steve Young’s radio show on KMIL. I had never been on the radio before so I was a little nervous. Had a bit of an upset stomach when I woke up that day.

At my age I’m not one for dressing up. Comfort before style in my world. After all, I am a newspaper editor not a county judge. But I decided I’d give a little more effort and show up kind of dressed up—for me anyway.

Then as I was driving to Cameron I thought, “It’s the dang radio you big dummy. No one’s going to see you.” I also discovered that the “nice” hoodie I chose that day had a stain right on the front of it from where I spilled a bite of refried beans. So “dressing up” was a useless endeavor all the way around.

If you’ve ever been around Steve for very long, you know he has a way of making everyone feel comfortable. It’s one of his gifts. And his wife, Lynn, is exactly the same way so that’s a match made in heaven. So anyway, I found I wasn’t nervous at all when we sat down in the recording room or whatever radio people call it.

The best part of all was meeting Lori Vega from Cameron who also received a small business loan, which was the topic of discussion on that show.

Lori is a seamstress who does alterations of all kinds. And here’s the part that makes you go, “Oh wow. I would never have thought of that.”

There were no proms during the pandemic, no kids needing school clothes hemmed, all of her usual business was taken away by the pandemic. So she was really having a hard time.

The way she used her grant was to diversify and start operating a cab service. She takes kids to school who live too close to be bussed, she takes people to the grocery store, to the airport. All kinds of places.

Her new business has taken off so well that she’s already bought a bigger van and is going to start offering her services to take people to Galveston for their cruises.

How imaginative is that? To create a service that didn’t exist but it turns out everyone wanted. Great job, Lori!

Okay, y’all, I don’t know what I’m going to do about this stray dog we’ve had for over a year who is still almost completely feral. Kallie brought him home over a year ago all skinny and starving. No one who lives with me stays skinny for long, so I’ve fattened him up.

It took a while for him to even let me pet him. I finally got a collar on him several months ago and he wears it. However, Dad tried to put a leash on him and he bit Dad’s hand and drew blood.

He loves me best so he didn’t bite me when I put the leash on him, but that dog wasn’t going anywhere on a leash. He sat down and wouldn’t move. I’d put him on his feet again but he just went limp. So that was an exercise in futility.

He also started slipping out of his collar and running off. The first time he did it it caught me off guard and I fell right on my backside hoping the Lopezes weren’t outside to see that.

He’s also very jumpy and excited to see me, Mom or Dad and that isn’t good either. No amount of “no!” stops him. He clawed Mom’s arm up one day and bruised her. And he’s big enough to knock her down.

So I don’t know what to do about him. Does anyone have any advice for me? My neighbor, Denise Monzingo, told me she had a troublesome dog that she took to a place in Round Rock who works with dogs for several months and then she started going to the place to work with them until they are better. I may have to look into that, but it sounds expensive. I’ll happily take any advice.
