Now that November is here we are officially in the holiday season. There are so many organizations and events that Rockdalians help out during the holidays and a very important one is coming up next month.
The 15th annual Buddy Oney Toy Run, brought to you by The Bad To The Bone Riders of Rockdale will take place on Dec. 5 at The Ranch.
I knew Buddy Oney for a long time before he died but I didn’t know exactly why the Toy Run was named after him. Luckily I reached out to both Charles Starr and Buddy’s daughter, Janet, for more information.
Both of them stated that Buddy always believed in paying it forward, giving back to the community, helping others and loving people. And I think that is reason enough.
After Buddy’s death, Charles approached Buddy’s wife, Billie, and daughters Janet and Vickie, about starting a ride in his memory. How nice is that? Of course they all agreed. And this Toy Run helps to keep his memory and generous spirit alive.
This group raises money for wonderful organizations like:
• The Milam County C.P.S. Board (Child Protective Services)
• Milam County Brown Santa Program
• Thorndale Cares
• The Rockdale Christmas Round-up
To the tune of over $86,000.
One hundred percent of the proceeds.
That’s an amazing accomplishment for the needy children in Milam County.
And with this year’s COVID-19 issues the need will be even greater than usual. So many families have had their household budgets affected by the virus that this year the work the Toy Run does is especially important.
“I don’t have a motorcycle. How can I help?”
I’m so glad you asked.
Brand new toys for boys and girls worth $25 will be collected at The Ranch the day of the Toy Run.
And monetary donations are always welcome.
If you are a rider you can participate by paying the entrance fee of $20 per bike or $25 with a passenger. Or a $25 toy.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. at The Ranch and the first bike will leave at 11 a.m. with beautiful rides through Milam, Lee and Burleson counties.
Last bike in will be at 3 p.m. and all participants of the ride will enjoy a meal donated by Brookshire Brothers and prepared by Brady Pest Control.
There will also be a 50/50 drawing and door prizes.
Stops and sponsors along the way are Cliff’s Tavern, Cyndi’s Hawg Hang Out in Hogg, Nat’s in Milano and The Ranch.
For more information about this ride, please contact Charles Starr, 512-540-2561, or Neal Ferrell, 512-299-7446.
Let’s reach down deep into our pockets for the less fortunate children in Milam County and help this wonderful group do what they do. The need is great for these kids, especially this year.—K.W.C.
