RISD REPORT

Last month Rockdale ISD was very proud to honor our Veterans during our ceremony at Rockdale High School.

We were also proud to recognize the winners of the VFW Patriots Pen, Voice of Democracy and Citizenship Teacher of the Year Award.

Each campus nominated a teacher for the VFW Citizenship Teacher of the Year Award, and this week Rockdale Junior High Principal Kelly Blair would like to share her nomination:

Donald “Doc” Shuffield is a highly deserving nominee for the “Citizenship Teacher of the Year” award.

After 29 years working as a child advocate in the welfare system, he is now utilizing his experience to directly impact students in the classroom.

Shuffield provides students with an understanding of democratic values and beliefs through classroom elections.

He begins each six weeks by accepting nominations for various offices within the classroom.

The election process begins at a very rudimentary level and becomes increasingly more complex as the year progresses including secret balloting, campaigning, and candidate speeches among peers.

Shuffield also holds the position of RJH Student Council Sponsor.

These students participate in a variety of community service projects including Pack Pals and the Pumpkin Patch.

Additionally, he provides classroom activities during Freedom week that include memorization of the Preamble of the Constitution.

Even before the school day begins, students can be found herding to join Shuffield and others as they build community, speak of their shared responsibility, and charge one another to lead by example.

There are few people that do more, and truly deserve to be honored for their citizenship, than Shuffield.

His work inspires his colleagues and students to view our veterans, our country, and our responsibility as citizens with a stronger sense of pride and urgency.

It is a privilege to have Donald “Doc” Shuffield representing Rockdale Junior High as a most deserving nominee for the Citizenship Teacher of the Year.
