You know what sells a lot of newspapers? A lead story about a new 660-home subdivision coming to town. We had an amazing week of rack sales for that issue. Brookshires, CEFCO, Caffey Corner and Mr. Gatti’s sold out and Walmart almost did. The greeter at Walmart told me they were still selling on Wednesday before I got there with the new issue.

Rack sales are great, but don’t forget that subscribing is a much better deal. It’s like getting three months free. —kwc— You know what I hate seeing? All of the negative comments about the new subdivision. We have way too many people in this town who want to complain about everything that is going on but aren’t interested in helping organizations who are affecting change in our town knowing that growth is coming.

How about instead of being negative ask yourselves how you could help instead of just complaining? We need more of that around here and less negativity. Try something new. You might like yourself better. Especially if you were one of the ones spreading your negativity about our new mayor’s vision for the city or this new subdivision.

Change is coming. Be a part of it or get out of the way of the people doing the work. —kwc— I was saddened to hear about the passing of Robert Whitmore last week. Last time I saw him he seemed to be doing just fine.

If you were a regular reader of my Dad’s weekly column, “Spoilin’ the Broth,” you will remember that he always started out with a “Neighbor Grover sez” joke. What you don’t know is that Dad got a lot of those Grover jokes from Robert. Dad always appreciated his sense of humor. Godspeed Robert. —kwc— Okay, I’m going to tell you this story and see if you are as surprised as I was. My apologies to Paul Luckey and Rockdale Monument Co.

I’m in a leadership class that meets once a month and the people in the class are a good mix of people new to Rockdale and those of us old timers who grew up here.

We got off topic and started talking about Rockdale’s image. One of the Rockdale newbies said he told a friend that he was moving to Rockdale and the person he told asked, “The Crack Capitol of Texas?” That’s what his friend thought of Rockdale. Not good.

Another of the newbies said, “What about that business across from Brett’s Backyard Bar-B-Que with all the tombstones? That just makes people think of death who are driving through town.”

All of us old Rockdale people were floored. Rockdale Monument Co. has been in its current location since 1946, long before I was born. It’s always been there and I have never once thought of it in any negative way. Just another family- owned business like my own.

I guess that just goes to show you that sometimes, when talking about the image of our city, it’s good to have new eyes as well as old ones.

And with the coming growth, I predict that when Paul, Carol and Linda decide to retire that land will be worth a pretty penny to retire on. Or maybe one of the Luckey boys will take it over for a third generation of the family business.

But when I tell you we old Rockdale folks were shocked upon hearing that view from a newcomer’s eyes, I‘m talking mouths open with chins on the floor!
