Dear editor, I am tired of hearing people moan and groan about the influx of people the Samsung plant will bring to our area. I am tired of people complaining that the economy is horrible. I beg to differ. Look at the number of construction jobs the Samsung plant is creating right now. Look at the opportunity this will bring to our young people, to get good solid decent paying jobs close to home.
Samsung’s new semiconductor manufacturing plant in Taylor is the first time I have seen good solid manufacturing jobs come to our area. It will provide our young people who grow up here, who are not going into farming or ranching, an opportunity to stay here, and raise their families here.
I spent my entire career in semiconductor manufacturing. It is lucrative and rewarding career. These companies, especially Samsung, provide excellent benefits and salaries. You may think that a college degree is required to work in semiconductor manufacturing, but that is not the case. When filling entry level positions, companies like Samsung are looking for a couple of things.
They are looking for someone with minimal computer skills. Each company uses its own software to control production, so anyone who is hired is taught that particular software. They are looking for someone who can handle being in a semiconductor clean suit for twelve hours a day. They are looking for someone who will show up on time, preferably early, for every single shift they are scheduled to work. If you need time off, they want plenty of notice that you will be out so they can get someone in to take your place. They run twelve-hour shifts, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Over a two-week period, you work four days one week and three days the next. They run 24/7 365 days a year. Therefore, they are looking for someone who does not mind working nights, weekends or holidays. That’s it!
There is plenty of room for advancement at these companies. Once you are in an entry level position, it is easy, with hard work and dedication, to move up to any number of higher positions. Management, Maintenance Technician or Engineering Technician. If you want to go to school on your days off, to further your career, guess what? They’ll help you pay for it.
The commitment that Samsung has made in central Texas is vast. They have been operating up on Parmer Lane for years. I have many friends who work for them and they are very happy employees. When these companies build one fab (semiconductor cleanroom fabricarion area), it is almost guaranteed, they’ll build a second one, on the same campus.
Samsung is a huge company, to search for jobs go to https://semiconductor. samsung.com/us/sas/workwith- us/job-opportunities/.

I agree it is a very good thing to have good jobs for our young people so they can stay in Rockdale after graduating high school. Not only will Samsung provide these jobs, but the advanced manufacturing and logistics campus at Sandow Lakes Ranch will also employ thousands.
I also could not agree with you more about the tiresome complainers.)
