Dear editor, As a Rockdale resident and City Council member, I am always pleased when I learn of citizens who want to be more involved in the life of our community. There are so many ways to become active in, and supportive of, various aspects of community life.
A partial list would include: The Tiger Booster Club, Band Boosters, The Kay Theater, Lions Club, The MARC Center, Vision Historic Preservation Foundation, the Rockdale ISD Education Foundation, Rockdale Earth Day, the Chamber of Commerce, the Rockdale I&GN Depot Museum, the Rockdale Community Market, as well as several boards which serve the City of Rockdale.
Association with, and involvement in any of these organizations is a good way to build a “community resume,” and to have your footprint seen in Rockdale. They also serve as good preparation and experience for those desiring elected office.
Roles such as City Council Member, Mayor, or serving on the MDD Board, are perhaps not considered “entry level positions.” They require a broad knowledge of our community, its citizens, our resources, our form of city government, as well as an ability to work productively in a group setting. When offered by the MDD, enrolling in the Leadership Course is a great way to demonstrate your sincerity in serving and your desire to learn and better yourself for such service.
If you would like to be considered to serve on any of the City of Rockdale boards, please complete the application which can be found on the city website, “Application to Serve on Boards and Commission.” As we grow, our town will need more citizens to step-up and play a role in making Rockdale a better place to live, work and conduct business.
Sincerely, Dave Melton Council Member for the East Ward & the City of Rockdale
