Dear editor, This is written for all the handicapped cars parked in the handicapped places at the Rockdale Fair and Rodeo on Friday, Oct. 18.
I parked in one of the handicapped spaces with a handicap sign in front of our car. I have to use a scooter to get around and have a lift on the back of the car.
We stayed for the rodeo but decided to leave instead of listening to the music. When we got to our car, another car had us clocked in so we could not lower the lift to load the scooter. We were able to maneuver the car to get the lift lowered and scooter on but then we had to drive between two handicap signs. Once our on the pavement, the exits were blocked.
My wife went back to the entrance gate and asked a SRT officer for help, but he said, “That is not my jurisdiction. It is the Fair’s responsibility.” My wife told him she would do it herself. She went to the gate at the south end and proceeded to move a full metal gate enough to get the car out. She expected to put it back, but it was so heavy it would not move. A woman, who may have been with the Fair, and a man came out and told her they would put it back. I believe this woman was standing next to the officer when my wife spoke to him.
The Fair Association needs to provide someone in the parking lot to make sure people do not block handicapped vehicles in. If it had been someone who was unable to do what my wife did, they would be stuck. We don’t know how many others were caught in this situation.
It sure makes me wonder if next year I want to go through this experience again. My wife and I enjoy supporting the Rockdale Fair and Rodeo.
Thank you, Don Weymouth 928-530-0002
