Rockdale Earth Day looking for volunteers
Dear editor, Tuesday, April 22 is the 55th anniversary celebrating Earth Day around the globe. These events are said to involve over one billion people in 193 countries. It is also the 11th anniversary of efforts coordinated by Rockdale Earth Day for our annual Day of Community Service.
Through the years, our projects have included litter pick-up, planting new trees, landscaping various city properties, one house demolition (thank you Perry & Perry Builders), and power washing key buildings within the city.
Through the years, we have adapted our efforts to meet the needs of our community and best utilize the volunteers who step up each year. For this year, we are moving away from our kick-off ceremony at the High School Gymnasium, from where students were bussed around town for service projects. Instead, each of the four Rockdale ISD schools will be doing projects at their campus locations.
We are calling upon other individuals, households, churches and businesses to take on clean-up or enhancement projects at sites of their choosing. Thus far, we are aware of efforts that will take place at MARC, the ISD Administration Building, First Presbyterian Church and along Miller Street.
We will have volunteers stationed at Hogan Hall (Rockdale Chamber of Commerce) from 9 a.m. until noon on April 22 to provide heavy duty trash bags to anyone wanting to take on a litter pick-up project. Additionally, we are asking that citizens take pictures of their projects and submit these photos to rockdaleearthday@ yahoo.com so that we can better recognize your service to our town.
It takes a village! Make God’s Good World Better!
Sincerely, David Melton Rockdale Earth Day Chairperson
