Thanks to citizen for providing senior rides
Dear editor,
When Dusty Albreight read that some of our seniors would no longer qualify for special HOP bus services he wanted to make sure those who qualified for a noon hot, balanced meal at the senior center would have transportation to get there and return home.
He provided the funds for those qualified folks to continue their transportation to the Senior Center well beyond the first of the year.
For many of our seniors they rely on the HOP transportation for their noon meals at the senior center four days a week, for grocery shopping, picking up meds and doctor appointments.
After speaking with local, county, regional and state officials, we find this directive is coming from the Department of Aging in Washington, D.C.
The local transit staff have generous hearts and are doing their best to make sure our citizens receive their needed transportation, but have to comply with directives from their employer in Belton.
Several years ago funding was cut from five to four days per week for the senior center and Meals on Wheels.
Rockdale individuals, businesses, and organizations stepped in to make sure that balanced meals would also be served on Fridays.
I would be remiss if I didn’t publicly thank Dusty Albreight and his crew for also donating two huge sandstone rocks for the grounds of the new police department.
While working at a location in Milam County he made the find! He and his crew spent several months off and on digging out these huge boulders, transported them and unloaded at the new police department.
Be sure to drive by the new Police Department at US 79 and Green Street to see how these rocks compliment the sandstone currently being placed on the west side of the building.
Equally important is socializing and fun at the Senior Center. Every morning there are usually several folks waiting at the door when staffers arrive. It may just be the morning coffee klatch or some of the planned activities such as bingo, cards or crafts or maybe working a puzzle or watching the television morning news.
Or, they may need to have their blood pressure checked.
Our community has such a big heart. We continue to sponsor fund raisers for our neighbors, for our kids, for our downtown revitalization, for our historic properties.
We care.
We all can name many folks who contribute and are always there to help. Today I have only recognized Dusty Albreight. one of those folks who gives much with no recognition.
You can never judge a book by it’s cover—his beard, he’s always in work clothes.
If you don’t know him, you might pass him by, but your life will be enriched if you stop and thank him for caring.
We do live in the greatest town with the most caring folks.
