RCS thanks volunteers for its 2018 successes
Dear editor,
During 2018 Rockdale Christian Services (RCS) Food Pantry fed an average of 200 families (450 individuals) per month in South Milam County.
RCS, a cooperative effort of local congregations, also operates the Heavenly Treasures Thrift Store located at 223 North Main, Rockdale. Proceeds from the Heavenly Treasures Thrift Store are used to support the RCS Food Pantry operations.
We thank the community for their donations of clean, gently used clothing and household goods.
Food assistance is made possible through many avenues including United Way grants, direct contributions of money and food, Heavenly Treasures sales, and lots of volunteer hours.
During 2018, RCS received 6,700 pounds of food donations, and monetary funds to purchase an additional 44,000 pounds.
In addition, beginning in September, we partnered with Central Texas Food Bank (CTFB) and Walmart to rescue food that was near its expiration date.
This partnership allowed us to rescue a total 5,700 pounds of food the last half of 2018.
Between donations, direct purchase and food rescue RCS was blessed with a total, 56,000 pounds (28 tons) of food for distribution in 2018.
This is all made possible through the team of volunteers who have committed over 5,000 hours during the year.
In addition, 2018 was the first full year co-sponsoring the Fresh Foods for Families CTFB mobile pantry with the Rockdale Knights of Columbus Council 7014.
On average 160 families per month are provided with 30 pounds of fresh produce each.
Distribution is open to all and occurs the first Thursday of each month at the KC Hall, distribution hours are 10:30 to 11:30.
On behalf of Rockdale Christian Services, I extend a heartfelt thank you to the community for their continued support.
Pam Warren,
Chair,
