Editorial correct, new business is the solution
Dear editor,
I was delighted to read your publisher Christine Granados’ editorial last week.
Her comments are on point. It should be readily apparent that we must have economic growth in this county if we are ever to get back on our feet. We need the jobs and we need the revenue.
Our primary source of revenue in the county is our ad valorem tax, which is 73 cents. Although this amount could be raised another seven cents it would only bring in another $700,000 or so and that is not the solution.
I might add the county does not plan a raise in taxes for 2020. So the only way to really increase the revenue for the county is new business.
Our first-ever economic summit was a huge first step. It is the beginning of a county wide discussion of the importance of economic development.
Because the county leaders, city leaders, school leaders, business leaders and economic leaders were in attendance, we have begun the process of working together as we move Milam county forward.
However, this is just the beginning and we will continue to make this a top priority and work on economic development every day.
This is no easy task and there is no one single solution, but I know we can do it. For example, last week a new business with about 22 employees started in Cameron and I am meeting with a solar company about coming to the county.
Thanks for attending this historic event and for your wonderful editorial.
Sincerely, Steve Young Milam County Judge syoung@milamcounty.net
